Acupuncture has been practised in China for thousands of years. It is now one of the most well-known and most widely accepted Eastern therapies. Fundamental to Traditional Chinese Medicine is the concept of yin and yang, opposite but complementary forces whose perfect balance within the body is essential for well-being. The interaction of yin and yang gives rise to Qi, which is an invisible “life energy” that flows through meridians, or channels, around the body. There are about 365 acupoints along the meridians at which Qi is concentrated and can enter and leave the body. It is possible to affect the circulation of Qi at these points by inserting fine, sterile needles to stimulate or suppress the flow.

| TESTIMONIAL: "I came to Melanie suffering from stress and I was unable to sleep. I had difficulty both falling asleep and staying asleep. Two months later I feel like a different person. I feel calm and am feeling strong. I am now sleeping. This would not have been possible without the acupuncture. Melanie listened carefully each week and adjusted her treatment depending on how I felt. Her kindness, support and encouragement were immeasurable. Her advice was insightful. Melanie is amazing and I could not recommend her highly enough". View guestbook for more testimonials |
What to expect from your first visit: Acupuncture is a medical system in its own right. The traditional theories of Chinese Medicine allow practitioners to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well being. A detailed consultation is required for an accurate diagnosis. It is important that your health and lifestyle are analysed in some detail. A few of the questions asked may seem irrelevant to you, but will help your practitioner decide which patterns of disharmony may be affecting you. Once the diagnosis has been made, fine, sterile needles will be inserted into the relevant acupuncture points. Does Acupuncture hurt? Acupuncture is virtually painless. It is important to remember that the needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine (0.25mm to 0.5 mm in width). You will feel a little scratch as the needle is inserted and sometimes a sensation which is unique to acupuncture. This sensation is known as "de qi" or "the arrival of Qi" and is often described as a "dull ache", "heat", or a "minor electric shock". Combination of Acupuncture & Massage Women's Health Many women suffer unnecessarily from PMT, menstrual pain or Menopausal symptoms, all of which respond very well to Acupuncture treatment. Symptoms are relieved by addressing the root cause of the problem and correcting the imbalance from within. Acupuncture is widely used in fertility treatment as it is known to improve chances of conception. Treatment primarily aims to induce relaxation, correct hormonal imbalances, encourage ovulation and prepare the lining of the uterus for implantation. I like to recommend that women chart their resting temperature first thing in the morning for at least one month (starting on the first day of the period). This helps me to see which part of the menstrual cycle needs attention. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions about the treatment.
